First off, thank you. You helped us raise more money this year than ever before!

Every year there’s lots of confusion over who can call themselves an actual “Donor.” We’d just like to be clear what Grounds for Health means by “Donors”: We equate “Donor” with financial or in-kind contributions to our organization − that is, someone who donates money, services, or time to Grounds for Health without receiving anything in return (besides a Tax write-off).

We list our Donors in our annual report, and we mention them in our E-News, on Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Unfortunately, as a buyer of coffee in the auction, we cannot classify you as a “Donor” … yet. This is because you received a product, good, or service (coffee or equipment, in this case) in exchange for payment.

But don’t worry; there’s still a way you can become a full-fledged Grounds for Health Donor and be mentioned alongside our list of donors …

Host a coffee promotion and donate proceeds to Grounds for Health.

It’s a quick and easy way to get involved: You select the coffee and terms (e.g. $1/pound), and then donate proceeds to Grounds for Health. Join the growing list of roasters and retailers who are making things happen.  Learn more »

IMPORTANT NOTE: We realize a promo isn’t right for everyone, and we certainly want everyone to be able to promote their participation in the auction. We just ask that you call yourself “Friend of Grounds for Health” or “Won Coffee in the Grounds for Health Auction” as opposed to language with “Donor” in it. This helps clarify things for our followers and your customers.

Bottom Line:

• Call yourself a “Donor” if you donate money, goods, or services to Grounds for Health
• Call yourself a “Friend” or “Participant” if you only buy coffee in the auction

I hope this clears things up without coming across the wrong way. It’s a difficult thing to try to explain without sounding ungrateful.

Thank you for participating in Grounds for Health’s 3rd Annual On-Line Green Coffee Auction last month. As you no doubt heard, this year marks the most successful auction we’ve held to date – bringing in over $145,000 to support the life-saving and sustainable cervical cancer prevention programs that we have developed with our partners in coffee growing communities in Latin America and Africa.

We are so grateful to the 52 donors who gave us 25,000 pounds of green coffee for auction.  Their generosity makes this event – our largest fundraising event of the year – possible. We are also so appreciative that you, and 50 others, chose to support our work through the purchase of coffee at this event.

Many successful bidders at past auctions have chosen to “pay it forward” by holding a coffee promo with the coffee they purchased to generate an additional contribution to Grounds for Health. In this way, coffee purchasers transition from supporters to donors and take the opportunity to let their customers know how and why they support an effort to help safeguard the health of women where coffee is grown. If you are interested in holding a coffee promotion with this coffee (or any other coffee you may have), we will provide you with some simple guidelines and supportive point-of-purchase materials. While we have a suggested donation per pound sold, we are most interested in working with each retailers to develop a program that works best for you and your market.

In turn, we recognize our coffee promo partners in all media available to us and proudly add their names to our growing list of donors on our web site and elsewhere.

PROGRESSIVE COFFEE COMPANIES COME TOGETHER TO RAISE OVER $145,000 FOR INTERNATIONAL NON-PROFIT

Over 200 coffee companies from around the world participated in the 2011 Grounds for Health Coffee Auction, raising a record sum for the non-profit.

June 2011, Waterbury, VT – Despite high green coffee prices and a tight market, coffee producers, importers, roasters, and retailers came together to raise a record $145,501.56 for international non-profit Grounds for Health during its annual green coffee auction.

52 coffee importers and producers donated over 25,000 pounds of green coffee, which was then bid upon by roasters and retailers during an online auction held by Stoneworks on June 7-8.

“We can’t believe the success of this year’s auction,” Communications Specialist Justin Mool said. “We had no idea what would happen, considering that coffee had been trading at record prices. But the fact that so many people participated, both in donating and bidding, shows that the coffee industry recognizes the impact Grounds for Health is having in coffee-growing communities. Thank you to all those that donated, bid and won!”

Some notable donations include a gourmet El Salvador package from Aida Batlle that fetched $24.60/lb (earning $7,380.00 total), an Ethiopia Bench Maji Gesha from Royal Coffee, Inc that was purchased for $12.04/lb (earning $6,370.60), and SCAA Coffees of the Year Winners Hawaii Kailiawa Coffee from Ka`u Coffee Mill and Columbia Valle del Cauca that closed at $40.20/lb and $53/lb respectively.

This year also marked the first time Grounds for Health auctioned equipment. Monin donated a La Marzocco Espresso Machine that earned $5500; Bunn donated a Trifecta Single Cup Brewer that earned $2900; and Wilbur Curtis Company donated two airpot brewers and a case of airpots that earned $890.

Grounds for Health would especially like to call out Royal Coffee, Inc (donations earning $27,424.82), Indokom ($8,518.18), Green Mountain Coffee Roasters ($8,135.22), Zephyr Coffee ($8,507.95), Royal Coffee NY ($7,424.82), Aida Batlle and Everest SA ($7,380.00), and the SCAA Roasters Guild, which donated this year’s Coffees of the Year (COTY) that brought in $7,868.45.

Also key to the success of this year’s auction was the enthusiastic participation of more than 180 bidders. In the end, 50 roasters and retailers walked away with winning coffee. Winner FinerGrind Coffee Roasters said via Facebook/Twitter:

“Bid and won amazing coffee from @grounds4health at the #gfhauction. Can’t wait for them to wind their way to FinerGrind Coffee Roasters. Award winning coffees from Costa Rica, Brazil, and Colombia. All auction proceeds go to support Grounds for Health, which makes it even more rewarding!”

And from Boyds Coffee via Twitter:

“We had the winning bid on five bags of Yemen Mocca Sanani in yesterday’s @grounds4health auction! We’ll have it available next month.”

Grounds for Health Chair of the Board and Swiss Water Decaffeinated Coffee Company CEO Frank Dennis summed things up, saying, “we are extremely grateful that in a very volatile coffee market the coffee industry continued to show great support and commitment to the Grounds For Health initiative with a 30% increase over 2010 in total auction value.”
